Six Reasons Why They Unfollowed You

Updated: Mar 6, 2019

Lose a follower on social media? One, or all, of these reasons, might apply.

By Cameo Storm

Have you ever wondered why someone unfollowed you on social media? Do you remember how you felt when it happened? It’s depressing. Another follower down, you might say.

It could have been a close friend, a family member or a colleague.

You’re probably wondering why they unfollowed you and to be honest, here are the six reasons why these individuals potentially hit the ‘unfollow’ button.

1. You Unfollowed Them

You might not realize it, but there are apps that can track your followers.  Last week when you might have unfollowed your old roommate, they may have received a notification letting them know you cut off that friendship. It may be drastic, but we all know how people overreact.

2. You’re Dull

SPICE IT UP. Please, let me tell you it’s not very interesting when you post, “Had a pretty boring day, HMU (Hit Me Up).” Be clever, witty and creative.

3. You Post Too Much

We get it. You love your dog and you want the world to know, but we don’t need a play-by-play of what they’re doing throughout the day. They licked your foot? Neat. Mark it in your diary. Your followers will be more inclined to follow you if you post in moderation on social media.

P.S. I’m not saying to eliminate all dog photos because it would be a travesty.

4. Lack of Engagement

No one gives without ever wanting anything in return. Try engaging your followers by being more interactive. How does the saying go—a like for a like? Don’t be afraid to comment on pictures. Followers are likely to repay the favor.

5. You Post Risqué Photos

Wow, Barbara, showing a bit too much there. C’mon, no one besides middle school boys or middle-aged perverts want to see your risqué selfies. Unless those are your intended followers, consider cleaning it up. Think what would my future employer think of my social media profiles?

 6. You Get Too Political

Everyone has the right to their own opinion. Go ahead and post whatever you want, but don’t be upset if you offend someone to the point that they unfollow you. Social media isn’t always the place for political opinion. Who you support or vote for, is for your knowledge ONLY, nobody else.
